Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford was a Nobel Prize winning New Zealand physicist who was a pioneering researcher in both atomic and nuclear physics. He was born on August 30, 1871, in Nelson, New Zealand. He is often called the “father of nuclear physics”.

Rutherford's most famous discovery was that the atom has a nucleus. He conducted experiments that led him to conclude that atoms have a small, dense nucleus surrounded by electrons orbiting around it. This discovery led to the development of the nuclear model of the atom.

Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his work on radioactivity. He was also knighted in 1914 and made a baron in 1931.

Rutherford's work on radioactivity led to the discovery of alpha and beta particles and the concept of radioactive half-life. He also discovered that radioactive decay could be used to determine the age of rocks and minerals.

During World War I, Rutherford worked on developing methods for detecting submarines using sound waves. He also worked on developing radar during World War II.

Rutherford died on October 19, 1937, in Cambridge, England.
